How to Clean Your Water Bottle Regularly

Your reusable bottle goes everywhere with you—work, the gym, hikes—but how often do you actually clean it? Regular cleaning ensures your bottle stays fresh, safe, and odor-free.

Clean your spout and internal straw regularly. Invest in a teeny tiny brush or pipe cleaners and clean through with warm, soapy water. Rinse well and drain dry upright. Never remove the hard spout part, and take care not to lose the air valve that sits underneath the folded-down spout. We sell spare air valves and seals. Caps are happy in the top rack of the dishwasher, but for best results, use a brush.

Handle your caps with care.

You can clean our Polypropylene sports cap in the dishwasher. Please place it in the top drawer. For the best results, we recommend washing it in warm soapy water. Use a small bottle brush to clean the hard-to-reach areas and the spout. Polypropylene is BPA/PBS and phthalate-free. It does not contain the endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are associated with health issues. However, this means it is a bit more fragile than those bad plastics. The toxic chemicals make the plastic softer and easier to shape.

Treat your cap with care, and it could last a lifetime. If it does get damaged, don’t worry—we sell spares or replacement parts for all of our caps.

How to Clean your Water Bottle – What do I do if rust appears?

  • Don’t worry. Even the highest grades of stainless steel can get rust spots and they are totally harmless. Remove the rust and your bottle will be as good as new.
  • Clean the Affected Area: Make a paste with baking soda and water. Use a soft cloth or stainless steel cleaner to gently scrub the rust. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Check the Source: Make sure the discoloration isn’t from outside sources. This includes mineral deposits from water or residue from a drying rack.
  • To Prevent Future Rust: Do not leave the bottle in damp places for too long. Clean it often, especially after using it with saltwater or acidic drinks.

How to clean your water bottle – My bottle has a nasty odour – What can I do?

Make sure to drain your bottle upside down. Don’t put it away while it’s still damp. If you do, you might smell bad when you open it at work the next day. No one wants to be that person.

Our stainless steel is the highest grade 304 or 18/8. It does not take on or impart odours or taste. Stainless steel is naturally resistant to bacterial growth but If your bottle does develop a nasty niff it can easily be remedied

If your stainless steel water bottle develops an unpleasant smell, here’s how to clean it effectively:

Materials Needed:

  • Warm water
  • Washing-up liquid
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Bottlebrush or a soft sponge
  • Optional: Lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide

Step-by-Step Cleaning:

  1. Routine Wash:
    • Rinse the bottle thoroughly with warm water to remove any residue.
    • Add a few drops of washing-up liquid and fill the bottle halfway with warm water.
    • Use a bottle brush or soft sponge to scrub the interior. Don’t forget to clean the cap and threads.
  2. Deep Cleaning with Baking Soda and Vinegar:
    • Sprinkle 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda into the bottle.
    • Add a splash of white vinegar (be cautious, as it will fizz).
    • Once the fizzing subsides, fill the bottle with warm water and let it sit for 15-30 minutes.
    • Scrub thoroughly with a brush and rinse well.
  3. Neutralize Odors:
    • If odours persist, fill the bottle with warm water and add a few tablespoons of lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide.
    • Let it sit for a few hours or overnight for best results.
    • Rinse thoroughly.
  4. Dry Completely:
    • After rinsing, dry the bottle upside down on a rack with the cap removed. This prevents moisture buildup, which can cause odours.
  5. Regular Maintenance:
    • Clean your bottle daily if used frequently, and deep clean it weekly or as needed.
    • Avoid leaving liquids in the bottle for extended periods, especially beverages like milk or juice.

Extra Tips:

  • Avoid abrasive scrubbers, as they may scratch the stainless steel.
  • If the cap has seals or rubber components, check for hidden mold and clean with soapy water or a vinegar solution.

This method ensures your bottle stays clean, odour-free, and safe for use! Other cleaning tips here

  • Avoid Drops & Dents: While durable, stainless steel bottles can still dent—use a protective sleeve if needed.
  • Wash Regularly: Prevent bacteria buildup by cleaning daily and deep-cleaning weekly.
  • Store Dry: Let your bottle air-dry completely before sealing to prevent mold.
  • Use the Right Cap: Different caps are designed for different uses—sports caps, screw lids, and straws all function best when maintained properly.
  • A well-maintained bottle doesn’t just serve you longer—it reduces environmental impact and keeps your drinks tasting fresh!
Sports cap use – With or Without internal Straw
Tip it or Sip it

You can use your onegreenbottle sports caps with or without their internal silicone straw. To use with the internal straw; drink from the bottle in the upright position – don’t tip it. If you use without the internal straw you need to tip to sip. If you choose not to use the straw internally, keep it handy to put in cocktails and smoothies instead! If you do use with the internal straw make sure you clean it regularly with a tiny brush or pipecleaner.

If you are having problems with not getting enough water through your sports cap please try the following things:

  1. If the internal straw is attached make sure you are not tipping the bottle
  2. If the internal straw is attached make sure it isn’t too long – trim to an angle so it doesn’t touch the base of the bottle
  3. Try using without the internal straw – make sure you tip to sip
  4. Still having issues – email us or give us a call we are always happy to help
